Post VFA-25's new CAG bird
For those that don't know, a CAG (Carrier Air Group) bird is the lead bird for a carrier based squadron. It's allowed to be painted nice to represent the squadron and "show off" a bit.

So, my current CO wanted to repaint our lead bird. We decided to change planes (meaning, make a freshly received rework bird the new '400'), and paint it. So, I got with some online friends of mine, and we came up with ideas for the new design. The CO tweaked what he liked, and we came up with what you see below. Then my squadron's paint shop got going on bringing it to life...

I realize now that my little pocket camera has finger smears from my kids on the lens, so apologies for the poor quality.

Here you can see a good look of the (almost) finished product. Tape covers the yellow pinstripe border. That will come off and touch-up/clean-up will happen this weekend. You can also see the inside of the vert stab. Well, somehow the taper ended up with a "WIP" copy of the tail... one that was rejected... so taped the "AA" backwards. I told them on Monday, and they'll have to sand down, retape, and paint it all this weekend. We're scheduled to do a full squadron photo on the 8th, so the pressure is on for these guys.

Best friggin paint job I have ever seen on a military aircraft. Totally awesome. :tu:

I would have thought your squad had transitioned to the F-18 E/F by now. When are they arriving?

We've got some of the oldest operational F-18C's in the fleet. We've got to keep them flying till mid-2012, when we're expected to get brand new Rhino's. (Single seat E's). I'll believe it when I see it.

The original plan was to transition us right to the JSF, but since that's been pushed back to an unknown date, they've got to give us somenthing.

Yeah I was going to comment that you have the older C models... Do they go through MLU programs? I'm sure you know all about that stuff now.

mid-life update.

Not that I'm real familiar with as a name. I know that they've undergone extensive modifications. And they are worked over by Depot level to extend the life of the airframe every so often. That may be what you are referring to.
